The VCNL36687S is a proximity sensor that integrates a high-power VCSEL (vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser) and photodiodes into a single, compact package. It features advanced CMOS circuitry for photodiodes, amplifiers, and analog-to-digital conversion. The sensor offers programmable interrupt functions with individual high and low thresholds for efficient resource utilization and power saving on microcontrollers. A key advantage is its ability to detect a Kodak Gray Card at 20 cm with only 20 mA pulse current, significantly lower than other sensors requiring 200 mA. The 12-bit proximity sensing utilizes an intelligent cancellation scheme to effectively eliminate crosstalk. Smart persistence further enhances response time by preventing misjudgments while maintaining speed. An active force mode allows for one-time triggering per instruction, optimizing power consumption. Operation is simplified through an I2C (SMBus compatible) interface. The device operates within a voltage range of 1.65 V to 1.95 V and is housed in a lead-free 8-pin molding package known for its market-proven reliability.
