Amorphous Silicon Solar Cells (Amorton)
Amorton is the world's first integrated (series-connectable) amorphous silicon solar cell, developed by Panasonic. Unlike crystal silicon, amorphous silicon features irregular atomic arrangements, leading to more frequent photon-silicon interactions and higher light absorption. This allows for the creation of ultrathin, flexible, and custom-shaped solar cells suitable for a wide range of applications, from low-power electronics to outdoor lighting. Amorton leverages the photovoltaic effect of semiconductors to generate electricity when exposed to light.

- Origin: Developed in Japan (implied by AM-1.5 standard reference)
Technical Specifications
| Feature | Description |
| Material Structure | Amorphous silicon (non-crystal material with irregular atomic arrangements) |
| Light Absorption | High, due to frequent reciprocal action between photons and silicon atoms. Allows for ultrathin films (< 1 m). |
| Manufacturing | Integrated (series-connectable) structure formed using decomposed material gases on substrates (e.g., glass, stainless steel, plastic film). Features transparent electrode, amorphous silicon film, metal electrode, and protective film. |
| Customization | Voltage can be designed by connecting multiple cells in series on a single substrate. Variety of shapes and forms possible (round, square, bent). Areas of transparent glass can be created by etching. |
| Light Sensitivity | High sensitivity within the visible light spectrum (approx. 400-700 nm), similar to the human eye. Suitable for visible light sensors. |
| Light Source Compatibility | Suitable for various light sources including sunlight (AM-0, AM-1, AM-1.5), fluorescent light, LED, incandescent light, and electric discharge lamps. |
| Illumination Levels | Effective in both indoor and outdoor environments. Outdoor illuminance ranges from 10,000 to 100,000 lux. Indoor levels range from less than 75 lux (emergency staircases) to 1,000 lux (design stands). |
| Electrical Properties (Outdoor Use - Glass Type) | Open-circuit voltage: 0.89V/cell Short-circuit current: 14.8mA/c Maximum power: 7.89mW/c (Under AM-1.5, 100mW/c, 25) |
| Electrical Properties (Outdoor Use - Film Type) | Open-circuit voltage: 0.82V/cell Short-circuit current: 12.0mA/c Maximum power: 5.6mW/c (Under AM-1.5, 100mW/c, 25) |
| Standard Test Conditions (STC) | Solar irradiance: 1000W/ (=100mW/) Spectrum: AM-1.5 Cell temperature: 25 |
