Amorton Amorphous Silicon Solar Cells
Amorton is the world's first integrated (series-connectable) amorphous silicon solar cell, developed by Panasonic. Unlike crystalline silicon, amorphous silicon features irregular atomic arrangements, allowing for more frequent interaction between photons and silicon atoms, resulting in higher light absorption. This enables the production of ultrathin films (less than 1 m) for power generation. Amorton cells can be manufactured with various voltages by connecting multiple cells in series on a single substrate, offering flexibility in voltage design for diverse applications. They are also highly sensitive to the visible light spectrum, making them suitable for use as visible light sensors.
Product Attributes

Technical Specifications
| Category | Description | Key Features |
| Amorphous Silicon Solar Cells | Integrated (series-connectable) solar cells utilizing amorphous silicon for power generation. | Ultrathin film (< 1 m), high light absorption, flexible voltage design, high sensitivity to visible light. |
| Manufacturing Process | Decomposed material gases form a film on substrates (e.g., glass, stainless steel, plastic film). Includes transparent electrode, amorphous silicon film, metal electrode, and protective film. | Patterning technology allows multiple cells in series on a single substrate. Variety of shapes and forms possible (round, square, bent). |
| Principles of Power Generation | Photovoltaic effect of semiconductors. Generation of electrons and holes when exposed to light, collected by internal electric field at a p/n junction, and electricity flows through an external load. | - |
| Light Sources | Sunlight (AM-0, AM-1, AM-1.5) and Artificial Light (Incandescent, Fluorescent, Electric discharge lamps, LEDs). | Spectral sensitivity similar to the human eye for visible light. |
| Illumination Levels (Reference) | Outdoor: Sunny Noon (100,000 lx), Sunny 10:00 a.m. (65,000 lx), Sunny 3:00 p.m. (35,000 lx), Cloudy Noon (32,000 lx). Indoor: Offices (300-600 lx), Restaurants (75-150 lx), Emergency staircases (< 75 lx). | Brightness is critical for both indoor and outdoor use. |
