Amorphous Silicon Solar Cells

Amorphous silicon solar cells, such as Panasonic's "Amorton," are a type of solar cell classified by their non-crystalline material structure. Unlike crystal silicon, amorphous silicon features irregular atomic arrangements, leading to more frequent photon-silicon interactions and higher light absorption. This allows for the production of ultrathin films (less than 1 m) capable of power generation. "Amorton" is the world's first integrated (series-connectable) amorphous silicon solar cell, developed using decomposed material gases to form a film on various substrates. Its key advantages include the ability to design cells with various voltages due to integrated series connections, flexibility in shape and form by utilizing substrates like stainless steel or plastic films, and high sensitivity within the visible light spectrum, making them suitable for use as visible light sensors.
