Amorphous Silicon Solar Cells (Amorton)
Amorton is the world's first integrated (series-connectable) amorphous silicon solar cell, developed by Panasonic. Unlike crystalline silicon, amorphous silicon features irregular atomic arrangements, allowing for more frequent photon-silicon atom interactions and higher light absorption. This enables the production of ultrathin films (less than 1 m) for power generation. Amorton cells are manufactured by forming a film of amorphous silicon on a substrate, followed by a metal electrode and a protective film. The integrated design allows for multiple solar cells to be connected in series on a single substrate, enabling custom voltage configurations for various applications. Amorphous silicon solar cells generate electricity through the photovoltaic effect, where light exposure creates electron-hole pairs that are then separated by an internal electric field at a p/n junction, allowing current to flow when an external load is connected.
