Amorphous Silicon Solar Cells (Amorton)
Amorton is the world's first integrated (series-connectable) amorphous silicon solar cell, developed by Panasonic. Unlike crystal silicon, amorphous silicon features irregular atomic arrangements, leading to more frequent photon-silicon interactions and higher light absorption. This allows for the production of ultrathin films (less than 1 m) for power generation. Amorton cells can be manufactured on various substrates, including glass, stainless steel, and plastic films, enabling diverse shapes and forms like round, square, or even bendable solar cells. Their high sensitivity within the visible light spectrum (400-700 nm) makes them suitable for both power generation and visible light sensing applications. Amorton offers flexibility in voltage design by allowing multiple cells to be connected in series on a single substrate, a feature not easily achievable with crystalline silicon solar cells. They are designed to operate under various light sources, including sunlight and artificial light, and are suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.
